Since then, Guangdong has built 12 X-band dual-polarization phased array weather radars with high spatio-temporal resolution, and has established collaborative observation and quasi-operational applications. The construction and application of radar networking will further enhance the ability of fine convective weather monitoring to provide technical support for the forecast and early warning of small and medium-scale weather.
Guangdong Meteorological Bureau has built 12 X-band dual-polarization phased array weather radars with high spatiotemporal resolution in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and other places for coordinated network observation and quasi-operational applications. The test results show that the X-band phased array radar network with high spatiotemporal resolution can effectively monitor the occurrence, development and dissipation of sudden rain, hail and tornado. In the next step, Guangdong Meteorological Bureau will continue to increase the construction of phased array dual linear polarization weather radar monitoring network, further strengthen the monitoring of nascent and development of strong convection weather, and improve the timeliness of approaching early warning.
It is reported that the weather and climate in Guangdong are complex and changeable. Strong convective weather such as tornadoes, hail, high winds, and short-term heavy precipitation frequently occurs, posing a serious threat to economic and social development and people's lives and property. In recent years, with the continuous development of radar detection technology, narrow-beam, high-resolution, dual-line polarization radar detection technologies have become increasingly mature, providing a powerful equipment guarantee for the monitoring and early warning of catastrophic convective weather at small and medium scales.
